Ever come across someone pitch their business to you, and you still don’t get it? Maybe you’re not smart enough… or maybe they just aren’t so good at explaining it.
Too often we see founders, managers, and even employees struggling to explain what their business does.
Something I’ve come across is this neat little framework. It’s simple, and straight to the point so that even your 5 year old cousin gets it.
So what’s this framework? It's the Storybrand method that covers the key elements of any business-
Who it’s for and the problem they have, what the product/ service does, and the benefits it provides.
Most people (have a specific problem)…
[Name of your business] does (features)…
So that (benefit it provides)...
My favorite app on a Friday night (minus the times I’ve had to wait 1+ hour for food at peak periods) is Uber Eats.
Let’s try this framework with a little example.
Most people find themselves wanting their food from their favourite venue, but are unable/ not wanting to pick it up.
Uber Eats provides an app that lets you order and get delivery from your favourite food venues.
So that you can get your tucker, without leaving the comfort of your couch.
What did you think of that? It really helps to articulate the business in a succinct way for simple to even more complicated businesses. Even if you need to expand on the above, it's a great starting point so your audience aren't scratching their heads 5 minutes into your pitch.
I use this one all the time, and it's often met with a 'a-ha!' moment from those I'm speaking to, with great conversation and questions following.
Give it a shot next time you're explaining your business.
